Smash cake sessions are seriously so fun! I love how unpredictable and messy they can be. Planning out some details in advance can ensure that we have the most successful session as possible!

Things to think about before your session:

  1. If you can, do a practice run at home. This will let you gauge how excited your little one will be to destroy the cake, and they will recognize they have permission to make a mess!

  2. Schedule your session when your little one is happiest. Morning or late afternoon. A good nap is critical to a successful session, so I advise we stay away from nap time.

  3. Bring extra clothes and towels for clean-up!

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I book my baby's smash cake session?
Cake smashes typically take place around 11-12 months of age. If you are wanting to make sure you have images back for a party or special event please let me know when you contact me.

If you are interested in my milestone collections you can view more details here.

Where will the session take place?
Smash cake sessions can take place in my studio (New Philadelphia, Ohio) or on location.

How long will the session last?
Your session will last around 60 minutes, but I tell my clients to be prepared to be with me for about 90 minutes. The first 10 minutes I will spend getting to know your child, that may look like me getting on their level and playing with them, or allowing you to hold your little one while I photograph them and talk to your child. Once we decide your child is ready we will spend about 15-20 minutes in the first outfit. I am a child-led photographer, so I will spend this time interacting with your child and letting them lead the session to capture their personality. We will change outfits and start the smash cake session, this will typically take up the remaining 30 minutes. Once I feel confident with what I have captured we will clean up, depending on the success of the smash cake this might take a little while.

What kind of cake should I get?

I will happily provide the cake so you have one last thing to think about in your busy schedule. The two local bakers I recommend are Cupcakes by Anna and Sugarfuse.

If you choose to get a cake yourself I recommend, a 3-tiered 4" cake or a two-tiered 6" cake.

+ They should be vanilla (NO chocolate).
+ Fluffy icing for easy smashing.
+ Icing colors should be white or pastel.
+ Bright/dark colors tend to stain skin and can easily take away from the images captured.

What should my baby wear?
Have you been looking for a way to make dressing your baby easier? I have the solution! My client closet is filled with outfits that will fit any age group from 6-18 months. There are dresses and rompers in neutral colors, pastel shades or prints--whatever suits their style (and yours!). You can also count on me if it's time we get customized clothing made especially just for them; my team knows what makes each individual child unique because they've seen him/her grow up before their eyes

How much does a session cost?
The session fee is $350 and it includes 15 digital files. Additional digitals and print products are sold separately. View Investment Page.

What will happen after the session?
After your photo session, I will start working on preparing your gallery, and 3-10 days later you will receive an email with access to your gallery.
